We have also many other celebrations of the Byzantine rite, some of
them proper of this Monastery of Grottaferrata:
| January 5th |
Vespers of Epiphany or Theophany – celebrated
on January 5th (afternoon) with the Water Blessing in memory
of the Baptism of the Lord. |
| January 6th |
The Water Blessing is repeated on January
6th after 11:00 A.M. High Mass, near the Liturgical Fountain. |
| March 20th |
In preparation for the Feast of the Annunciation, Akàthist Hymn is sung. |
| Great Lent |
"The
Lenten worship is... a school of repentance. It teaches us what
repentance is and how to acquire the spirit of repentance".
During the weekdays the Divine Liturgy it is not celebrated, but
every Wednesday and Friday the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts
is celebrated in the afternoon. During this solemn rite the faithful
receive the Holy Species consecrated on the preceding Sunday. |
| Holy Week |
Typical of Grottaferrata during the Holy Week are some celebrations:
On Maundy Thursday the cleaning of the Altar, the Washing of the
Feet and the Liturgy of the Last Supper. During the night between
Thursday and Friday at 04:00 a.m the Holy Passion of the Lord is
celebrated, with the reading of the 12 lessons of the Gospel. In
Friday afternoon the procession with the tafos (tomb) of the
Lord is celebrated after Vespers. At the Vespers of Holy Saturday
the first part (baptismal) of the Eastern Vigil is celebrated. |
| August 1st-14th |
During the first fourteen days of August, in preparation to the
great Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the
Paràklisis (Intercession) in her honour is celebrated in the
afternoon. |
| September 14th |
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Great Vespers on
13th). |
| Sept. 25th-26th |
Feast of St. Nilus, the
founder of this Abbey. Vesper and procession on September 25th at
5:00 p.m. and Divine Liturgy on September 26th at 11:00 a.m. |
| November 11th |
Feast of St. Bartholomaeus, co-founder of the Abbey. |
| December 17th |
Dedication of the Basilica. |
